Label: UNDER THE OLD FIR-TREE. / THIS is Abies larix, the common Larch Fir - a tree which delights in an / elevated situation, and grows best in barren, exposed land, with no / neighbours but a few of its own relations. The last Duke of Athole / planted immense quantities of it in various mountainous parts of / Scotland; and in situations upwards of sixteen hundred feet above sea-level, trees / of this kind, eighty years old, have yielded six loads each of the finest timber. In the / Highland deer forests trees of this size and grandeur are uncommon. / Some branches already bare announce that the fir-tree, like the old forester beneath / it, has seen its best days; even now it would afford but poor shelter from a heavy / shower. The two deer-stalkers at its foot are evidently resting after a piece of suc- / cessful sport. The deerhounds, glad of a chance to take breath, and the little Skye / terrier complacently regarding the dead stag, lend an additional interest to the sketch. / The original is in the possession of Mr. A. Myers: it has not been otherwise / engraved. //
