Inscription: T.O. //
Inscription: SIR EDWIN LANDSEER. R.A. DEL.T //
Stamp: WITT / LIBRARY //
Label: WAITING. / MR. GRAVES says that these figures are "portraits of Buscar, a Highland / deerhound of the original breed that belonged to Mr. MacNeill, a fox- / hound, bloodhound, and greyhound, from crosses of which the modern / deerhound is obtained, and a terrier." If we may judge by Landseer's / measure of success in the matter, it is scarcely possible to paint a really taking picture / of a group of dogs without any surroundings: their humanity, if we may so say, is / great, but falls short of this climax. We would suggest a comparison with "The / Three Dogs," to which sketch the present picture is perhaps rather inferior. / "Waiting" has been exhibited twice - viz. at the British Institution in 1839 as / "Dogs," and at the Marylebone Institute in 1859: it was bequeathed to the nation / by Jacob Bell Esq., in 1859. Thomas Landseer engraved it in 1839, under the name / of "Highland Dogs," as the frontispiece of Scrope's "Last Days of Deerstalking." //
