Inscription: T.O. //

Inscription: SIR EDWIN LANDSEER. R.A. DEL.T //

Stamp: WITT / LIBRARY //

Label: THE drawing which has been here engraved under the title of "In the / Glen" appears in Mr. Grave's catalogue as "Deer in Repose." The / date, we notice, is 1820, and the artist's first visit to Scotland was paid / to Sir Walter Scott at Abbotsford in 1824. Some interest attaches to / the piece, as being probably his first attempt at drawing those animals with whose / forms he must afterwards have been so familiar. At this time (1820) Landseer began / systematically to study these monarchs of the glen, and it is probable the deer before / us were sketched in some English park to which he had access. //
