Inscription: SIR EDWIN LANDSEER. R.A. PINX.T //
Inscription: H. S. BECKWITH. SCULP.T //
Inscription: HIGHLAND MUSIC. //
Inscription: T.O. /
Stamp: WITT / LIBRARY //
Label: HIGHLAND MUSIC. / HOW the artist's heart must have been in this picture, and how he must have / striven to hand down to posterity some of his own interest in these / homely objects! Each dog in turn arrests the eye, and then we proceed / to admire the high, clear forehead of the old Highlander. Some of / Landseer's most interesting pictures turn on the different emotions excited by the / same cause in dogs of different breeds and ages. We have learned by this time that / no trifle will disturb the equanimity of a grave old deerhound, but the three small / dogs are of course looking with all their eyes, and listening with all their ears; one of / them has perfectly the appearance of howling in chorus. In the picture the colouring / is very subdued, the old man's red stockings forming the brightest spot in the whole: / the gleam of light in the background skilfully brings out the size of the room. / "Highland Music" was painted for the late Mr. Vernon, and was presented by / him to the nation in 1847: it has been engraved for the Art Journal, and there is also / a lithograph by Soulange Tessier. //
