Label: THE STABLE. / THE Stable," like "Oxen at the Tank," is one of the sketches which / Landseer brought home with him from his continental tour in 1840, / and is perhaps the best known of them all. It is remarkable that / none of these sketches were afterwards worked out on canvas; and it / has already been suggested that they were taken merely with a view to amusement / and the filling up of an idle half-hour here and there. / There is a special beauty and value in a sketch of this kind, for it is only in such / that the natural taste of the artist is best distinguished. He may throw his best / efforts into a work which he knows is to bring him fame and fortune; but then he / must find it hard to avoid considering, at the expense of his own, the tastes of those / whose eyes he is painting to please. And so a certain amount of formality will very / often creep in; so small as only to be discerned by comparison with a piece executed / under circumstances like the present. Landseer was an extremely natural painter, so / that we do not expect to find any marked contrast between this and a more elaborate / picture; yet here who can help noticing that complete rendering of animal expression / by a few skilful touches for which he is so justly famous? / Of all the engravings of Sir Edwin Landseer's works produced by Mr. C. G. Lewis, / perhaps not one is better than the present; the horses are unusually well reproduced. / The original is in the collection of George Gurney, Esq., Eastbourne. //
