Inscription: SIR EDWIN LANDSEER. R.A. PINX.T //
Stamp: WITT / LIBRARY //
Label: THE DOG AND THE SHADOW. / A PIECE with so much depending on the landscape is rare in Landseer's / works, and no one who has followed with any care the changes increasing / years wrought in his style will hesitate before assigning to this picture / a comparatively early date; it was, in fact, painted in 1826. The care / evidently bestowed on such an elaborate landscape was never so spent ten years later. / A greedy cunning is well shown in the dog's eyes and attitude. (...) / This picture, exhibited at the British Institution in 1826, was presented to the / nation by Mr. Sheepshanks in 1857: it has not been otherwise engraved. //
