Inscription: SIR EDWIN LANDSEER. R.A. PINX.T //
Stamp: WITT / LIBRARY //
Label: THE PET OF THE DUCHESS. / A WRITER in the Art Journal holds that this spaniel belonged to the late / Dowager Duchess of Beaufort. Landseer certainly painted a picture / of her Grace's dog some thirty years ago; but the sketch of which the / engraving is before us was made much later, and, as the inscription / in the artist's handwriting tells us, from memory. It is quite natural that a man so / passionately fond of dogs as was Sir Edwin Landseer should carry with him the / recollection of such a beautiful creature as this spaniel. Even he could rarely have / seen a prettier dog. Its high breeding and the nobility of its appearance more than / justify the title of this picture: in fact, we not only think a better title could not have / been chosen, but that a better instance of a well-chosen title can scarcely be found. //
