Inscription: SIR EDWIN LANDSEER. R.A. PINX.T //
Stamp: WITT / LIBRARY //
Label: A SETTER DOG. / MENTION will be found of this sketch in Mr. Grave's catalogue under the / name "A Spaniel lying down;" we have, however, preferred to give it / a different title here. The original sketch was executed in 1819, when / the artist was only seventeen years old, and is now in the possession of / Henry Squire, Esq. There can be little doubt that Landseer met the dog somewhere / about Hampstead, and took a fancy to draw it. And no wonder, for it is a handsome / animal-intellectual-looking, we may almost say. It is well known that the feet of the / setter are harder and tougher than those of the pointer, though we cannot suppose / that there is any intention to point this out in the position of the dog before us: it / must have been the dog's instinct, evidenced by the clear eye and clever head, rather / than its capabilities of body, that occipied Landseer's thoughts while this sketch was / being done. The engraving was done by C. G. Lewis in 1841. //
