Label: STARTLED. / STARTLED" furnishes a very good example of the artist's power of / drawing animals when quite a boy. The horse is of course the only / object to be noticed in the sketch; and we have before us a fair / opportunity of seeing such works as inborn talents are wont to produce, / before culture and practice have done anything to obscure the clearness with which / such early work shows the artist's originality. For Landseer was but just seventeen / at the time this was drawn; nor had he as yet attempted much besides animals. / The idea is simple enough. The horse grazing in the meadow has suddenly come / upon a snake, and is thoroughly frightened. This is well shown by the raised foreleg, / fixed eyes, and fallen mane. / The etching was done by Mr. Lewis in 1853. //
