Label: WEST VIEW OF THORNTON ABBEY. / WILLIAM LE GROSS, Earl of Albemarle, and Lord / of Holderness, A.D. 1139, founded a monastery of Black / Canons here, and recommended it to the Blessed Virgin; ac- / cording to Dugdale, it was first a priory, and they were intro- / duced here from Kirkham, under one Richard their prior, who / was made abbot in the year 1148, by Pope Eugenius III. ...//
