Label: Michelangelo Buonarroti / b. 1475; d. 1564. Sculptor, painter, draughtsman, architect / and poet; worked at Florence, Rome and (briefly) Bologna / 10 Study for The Creation of Adam / Red chalk, 7 1/2 x 10 1/8 (192 x 257) / NACF 1926, 528. Bought by the NACF with the aid / of contributions from Sir Joseph Duveen, Bt, and Mr. / H. Van den Bergh and presented to the British Museum / A study for the figure of Adam in the fresco of The / Creation of Adam on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in / Rome. This vast undertaking was commissioned by / Pope Julius II in 1508 and was unveiled in 1512. During / part of that time Michelangelo was working simul-/taneously on the earlier commission (1506) to carve / Julius's tomb, a work that occupied him for nearly forty / years and which was never fully completed. //
