Label Text

Based on an earlier painting, this portrait of the artist Eustache Le Sueur (1617-1655) was made on the occasion of the engraver Charles-Nicolas Cochin the Elder becoming a member of the French Academy in 1731. The partially rolled up drawing in the sitter’s hand expands beyond the frame in an impressive demonstration of Cochin’s virtuosity as an engraver. Le Sueur’s role as a painter is specifically noted in the prominent inscription on the plaque and referred to visually by the inclusion of the drawing, the palette and artist’s brushes.
