Like other Pre-Raphaelite artists, Millais contributed numerous illustrations to the popular periodicals which flourished in the 1860s. The Parting of Ulysses, depicting a scene from Homer’s Odyssey, first appeared as a wood-engraved image in a popular periodical, Once a Week, engraved by Joseph Swain. The jewel-like watercolour by Millais, also in the Courtauld's collection (D.1952.RW.3813) showing the sorceress Circe waving farewell to the Greek hero, is a near copy of the print and was probably made to meet the art market’s demand for small-scale watercolours.
