Richardson was a prolific etcher. Unlike other forms of printmaking commonly used at the time, which were technically demanding, etching was as easy as drawing: it required only a copper plate coated with wax, and a needle with which to draw the design.
This particular self-portrait was eventually used as the frontispiece to the published edition of Richardson’s poems, Morning Thoughts. Although the book was not published until long after his death, it is likely that he made it for that purpose.
