William Nicholson made this striking commemorative portrait of Queen Victoria to celebrate her Diamond Jubilee of 1897. He based it on a photograph in the Illustrated London News. Despite its lack of pomp and grandeur, the ‘cottage loaf’ image of the Queen was much loved by the general public. For the publisher William Heinemann, the design was so daring he was unwilling at first to issue it. However, he later gave it place of honour in his first series of Twelve Portraits (1899).
