During the course of this series, Nicholson’s style underwent a change. Compared with his print Barmaid (The Courtauld, G.1990.WL.5200), this image is more delicately cut and the composition more detailed. The artist cleverly evokes the atmosphere of the different locations, here a view of Hyde Park from the street. The introduction of a horse and carriage and well-dressed figures in the background highlights the lowly status of the hawker with his tray of toys and ribbons.
