John Martin’s mezzotint production was one of the most ambitious print publishing enterprises of the nineteenth century. The reputation of this visionary artist was founded on the striking use of the medium for his Paradise Lost series. He depicted Milton’s epic poem as a battle between the forces of darkness and light, his Sublime imagery greatly enhanced by the rich tonal effects that mezzotint allowed. Issued in bound volumes, this small plate series was immensely influential.
