Although he was born in the Netherlands, Laroon lived and worked in England for most of his life. Most of his small etched compositions show figures in tavern settings drinking, conversing or playing card games. These loosely-handled etchings suggest the influence of Dutch genre prints of everyday life. Such ‘low-life’ subjects were disliked by the antiquary and engraver George Vertue who criticised Laroon’s questionable lifestyle and morality.
