This scene depicts in exquisite detail a mock battle staged yearly on an artificial island in the River Arno by Florence’s guilds of weavers and dyers. The Grand Duke, Cosimo II, commissioned this etching from the Lorraine artist Jacques Callot to commemorate the occasion in 1619. One thousand impressions were printed, of which five hundred prints were cut out, stuck down on board, and distributed to spectators. Indeed, a tiny figure perched on a volute at lower centre holds just such a fan.
