This richly detailed etching belongs to a series by Edward William Cooke entitled Views of the Old and New London Bridges published in 1833. Viewed from the South Bank, Cooke observes men toiling to dismantle the 623-years-old London Bridge. Across the Thames, the Monument to the Great Fire of London of 1666 is also depicted. Together, these architectural sites attest to the sometimes tragic acts of creative destruction that belong to London’s long history of urban transformation.
