This etching after Dürer’s drawn study of the The Holy Trinity is one of 50 etchings after the original works within the collection of Carl Theodor, the Elector Palatine, Duke of Bavaria at Düsseldorf. God the father, wearing the papal tiara, supports Christ below the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove, and accompanied by angels. Though etched by German printmakers for the Duke of Bavaria, the plates were later published by English publishers Boydell c. 1800, who tried to capitalise on the international demand for prints at this time. The French inscriptions below these etchings indicate that the publishers intended to sell this collection on the continent. The etcher has copied directly from the model without an intermediary copy, as the image is in reverse to the original.
