The three saints hold their attributes: Saint Stephen, the first Christian martyr, holds a palm frond and stones with which he was stoned to death; Pope Sixtus II, who was beheaded under the persecution of Emperor Valerian, holds a purse and wears the papal tiara; whilst Saint Lawrence, who was Sixtus's deacon, holds a book and a gridiron upon which he was roasted to death. The woodcut is believed to have been made in honour of Sixtus Turcher, who was Provost of the Church of Saint Lawrence in Nuremburg in 1493-1503. The rationale behind the presence of Saint Stephen is unknown. Though this woodcut is technically adept, the elongation of the figures throws the attribution to Dürer into doubt.
