Based on Dürer’s drawing in the Albertina (c. 1508) which was made in preparation for his Assumption and Coronation of the Virgin altarpiece (Frankfurt, 1508-9), Dürer’s original drawing of a pensive old man in a cap was a study for one of the apostles. This engraving is one of three heads after Dürer that Sadeler reproduced from the collection of the Holy Roman Emperor, Rudolf II. The plaque below the drawing does not follow the original model but acts as an additional tribute to Dürer in the custom of his portrait drawings, which Sadeler must have seen. These prints by Sadeler are among the first reproductive engravings after drawings to record a collection, a practice which later became common in the seventeenth century.
