Jesus bids farewell to his mother before taking his final journey to Jerusalem. From devotional rather than biblical sources, this scene encapsulates the moment when Christ anticipates his death. On her knees from grief and supported by Mary Magdalene, the Virgin clasps her hands, pleading with Christ not to leave. This engraving is one of 17 direct copies by Raimondi of the woodcut series of the Life of the Virgin by Dürer, begun c. 1500. Though there were 20 woodcuts in Dürer’s series, only 17 were in circulation at the time this engraving was made. The number ‘16’ in the lower centre marks this print as the penultimate in the copied series.
