The mother of the Virgin Mary, St Anne, embraces her husband Joachim after discovering that she is pregnant, despite her age. The couple stands below the Golden Gate of Jerusalem, which in Dürer’s original woodcut in his Life of the Virgin series is elaborated with an ornate organic filigree design and statuettes, but which Raimondi has chosen to simplify. He uses short parallel marks not only to describe the gate as stone but the image itself as a woodcut, replicating the medium of the original model but using the technique of engraving. The central image has been carefully copied, down to the character of the individual marks that emulate Dürer’s own hand. The '3' in the lower centre marks this print as the third in the series.
