William Hogarth made this print early in his career to illustrate a travel book by the French author Aubry de la Mottraye (c. 1674-1743). Hogarth himself never left England, and his depictions of peoples from other lands is filtered through the lens of the writings and images of others. The figures of the Greek dancers depicted here derive from images found in an earlier book, Recueil de cent estampes représentant differéntes nations du Levant (A Collection of One Hundred Prints Representing Nations of the Levant, 1712-13). Hogarth's print adapts figures found in an illustration by the French engraver Jean-Baptiste Vanmour, adds others, and places them in a landscape.
