The title inscribed below the image translates as ‘the interrupted game’. It hints at the moralistic overtones of this image, which shows a woman trying to interrupt the men’s excessive card-playing. The wine and the cards and pipes scattered in the foreground unite three recurrent subjects – alcohol, gaming and tobacco – used to represent sinful peasant leisure.
