The Florentine sculptor Baccio Bandinelli established one of the earliest art academies, which he called later in life ‘my particular academy of design’. This engraving shows Bandinelli sitting at a table holding a statuette of Venus for his apprentices to copy. The classical statues, book, and Latin inscription all emphasise the intellectual nature of the art of drawing, disegno. The elongated shadows may refer to the classical author Pliny’s anecdote of the origin of painting through tracing the form of a figure’s shadow.
