Label Text

The figures of the Virgin and Child are here depicted with graceful and expressive distortion, hallmarks of Mannerism and typical of the work of Jacques Bellange. Few examples of Bellange’s prints survive; this is the only known impression of the first state (version) of this etching, and differs in several notable details from subsequent states. It has been suggested that the faintness of this impression may be due to the fact that ink often takes time to work its way into the lines of a newly etched plate.
