Like images of Paradise, scenes of the Flood provided a perfect opportunity for artists to practise their animal drawing skills. In this engraving of Noah's Ark, however, the awkard creatures appear like those illustrated in popular sixteenth-century compendia. Based on a fresco designed by Raphael in the Vatican loggia, Bonasone's composition is greatly condensed, with exaggerated emphasis on clusters of fantastic animals, including strange flying griffins and dog-like beasts.
