Label Text

This sheet shows one of two different states of an etching of the art theorist, critic and artist, Roger Fry (1866–1934); an example of the other state is also held in The Courtauld collection. Sickert caricatures Fry as a threatening professor looming out of the shadows of a lecture hall, pointer in hand. The light from the lantern beside him illuminates his disorderly hair and spectacles, contributing to his rather zealous expression. The title on the plate refers to Fry’s strident belief that art should be understood in formal rather than literary or symbolic terms.
