This etching relates to a number of paintings and drawings of this old fiddler seated in a chair, playing his violin. He lodged at one of the Rowton houses, a collection of working men’s hostels located around London. Based on a preparatory drawing the outlines of the figure and the violin have been closely copied onto the copper plate. Indeed, the marks describing the action of playing the instrument translate the same sense of movement and dynamism, as the initial sketch.
