Inspired by Michelangelo's sculpture of the same subject, the muscular body of Christ, draped across the lap of the grieving Virgin, reflects Goltzius's admiration for the Italian artist, whose works he encountered on a tour of Italy in 1590. The
precise, almost brittle quality of the engraved line reflects the influence of the earlier master Albrecht Dürer. However, the dazzling decorative patterns formed by the closely packed lines defining the figures’ haloes are more typical of Goltzius than of his predecessor.
