When Morisot was training as an artist, it was considered inappropriate, even dangerous, for women to attend life drawing classes, a central component of French artistic education. She only began to depict the female nude figure relatively late in her career. This drypoint revisits Morisot’s painting of professional model Carmen Gaudin, who was also painted by Toulouse-Lautrec. Gaudin sat for Morisot in the bathroom of Morisot’s family home, where she poses as if interrupted while bathing.
