Very few drawings survive for the Vari Capricci, which suggests that Tiepolo worked out the compositions of these prints fully before starting work on the copper plates. An impression of an earlier state of this print in the Hermitage has been altered by the artist in pen and ink ,and these alterations were subsequently made to the copper plate, further suggesting that he finalised the designs during, rather than before starting, the etching process.
