Rubens was closely involved in the reproduction and dissemination of his work; he collaborated with a handful of highly skilled printmakers and even obtained a privilege (the forerunner of a copyright) controlling authorised reproductions. This large-scale woodcut reproduces part of a cycle of paintings Rubens made for the Jesuit Church in Antwerp (now destroyed). By the seventeenth century, woodcut had largely been superseded by engraving and etching, but it proved ideal for conveying the force and drama of Rubens’s paintings. Such prints were prized by
discerning collectors during Rubens’s lifetime.
