One of Piranesi's intentions in the Carceri etchings, of which this is one, was to experiment with ways of achieving variations of tone by means other than the usual line techniques of parallel shading or cross hatching. The extraordinary tonal areas in this print are thought to have been achieved by brushing acid directly on to the copper plate, and letting it bite freely, to create areas of roughened surfaces which will print an uneven texture that appears grey from a distance.
