The 'trophies' - piles of shields, and other pieces of armour and weaponry, topped with plumed helmets - on either side of the stairway were a traditional Roman way of carrying the spoils taken from defeated enemies during triumphal processions. Here the foreground figures suggest the viewpoint of the conquered rather than the conquerors.
