The areas of grey tone so vital to the atmosphere of this image are thought to have been created by 'open-bite': brushing acid directly onto the plate, and letting it bite indiscriminately, to create an area of tone, rather than the lines created by drawing with a needle through a ground. The unsettling atmosphere is compounded by the expressions on the faces of the ringed masks at the foot of the central pier, which seem to be those of suffering human beings, rather than architectural features.
