The title of this series translates as 'Fanciful inventions of prisons, etchings published by Giovanni Bouchard, dealer in the Corso, Rome'. Piranesi's name did not appear on the title page and was only added to a few of the plates int he first edition, which ocntained fourteen prints. The individual titles used today are modern descriptions which help identify the images; Piranesi himself did not give the prints titles.
