Rather than reproducing a painting, this Renaissance print, published by Hieronymus Cock (1510-70), is conceived as a work in its own right. Pig slaughtering, which traditionally took place in autumn, dominates the foreground, while various activities associated with harvesting populate the background. Details such as the troughs of boiling water used to remove the pigs’ hair underline the illustrative character of the image. The Latin inscription, which describes the gifts of autumn, firmly places the peasants’ labours within the cycle of the seasons.
