The strong contrast of light and shadow evokes the heat as peasants engage in activities associated with summer. Fruit is harvested in June, hay in July and corn in August. This unrestrained abundance complements the harmonious order of Spring. Humour punctuates the design as vegetables replace a woman’s head, whilst the man’s foot extending beyond the frame highlights his unbridled behaviour. Inscriptions comparing the seasons to the ages of man, equating Spring with childhood and Summer with adolescence, were likely added by the publisher.
