The books, pose and beard of the figure standing in the foreground suggest that he is a soothsayer or wise man, whilst the helmeted figure seated beside a banner seems to be a soldier. It is difficult to identify his companion who is bending over and talking to him, although his pose and expression may suggest anxiety or urgency. This figure points to the open grave and tomb lid which spearates them from the older man, once more adding a sense of unease to the open, sunny landscape.
