This etching from Vari Capricci, the earliest series of prints produced by Tiepolo, demonstrates his ability to invent imaginative compositions. The scenes combine figures and monuments in enigmatic groups that suggest themes of folklore and witchcraft, although their exact meaning is unknown. The connoisseur and collector Pierre-Jean Mariette noted that Tiepolo represented ‘dreams that passed through his head’ in these works. Here he conveys the macabre subject
through the mortals’ varying reaction to their encounter with Death, some recoiling and others leaning forward with curiosity.
