Montmartre prostitutes were among Lautrec’s favourite models. Here the woman who ran the maison close or brothel in the rue des Moulins is shown leaving the theatre with a companion, a discrete shadow in the background. The lifelike statue reflected in the mirror perhaps refers to the brothel-keeper’s occupation. Its naked body contrasts with her full evening costume; only the shape of her coiffure echoes the sculpture’s voluptuous outline.
