This etching depicts a row of horse-drawn cabs belonging to the firm of Barnett’s, stationed at the fish market in Dieppe. The subtitle refers to Milton’s sonnet ‘On his blindness’ (‘They also serve who only stand and wait’). Sickert was a frequent visitor to the French town and often sketched such everyday scenes. Transferred from a preparatory drawing to the copper etching plate, this work maintains a sense of spontaneity as if capturing a fleeting moment observed on the street.
