In this striking composition two women in coats and hats are seated side-by-side on a bed, facing in opposite directions. The psychological mood seems deliberately ambiguous and the viewer is left to interpret the women’s blank expression. The etching was made from a preparatory drawing (dated 1911, private collection) which Sickert followed closely, replacing the hatched pen strokes with similar lines drawn with the etching needle. Sickert also produced a painting of the same composition which he showed at the first exhibition of the Camden Town Group in 1911.
