Edgar Degas opened Toulouse-Lautrec’s eyes to theatre and dance subjects and to unconventional ways of depicting them. In this lithograph he conveys the rhythm and vigour of the dancer’s movements, viewed from below in the full glare of the footlights. In traditional tutu and ballet shoes Ida Heath parodies classical dance with a high-kick worthy of the Moulin Rouge.
