The relationship between the male artist and the female model became a central theme in Picasso’s art in the 1920s. In this, the first etching he devoted to the subject, he depicts an artist contemplating his canvas under the gaze of his model, whose Grecian profile recalls that of Picasso’s lover, Marie-Thérèse Walter. The economy of line, similar to that of Picasso’s contemporaneous drawings, and the sculptural quality of the figures underscore his engagement with classical art.

Notes

This etching was made in Paris in 1927 (between January 29 and March 29). It was published by the Société des Amateurs d'Art et des Collectionneurs in an edition of 100 on wove Arches paper printed by Leblanc and Trautmann in 1927, after the plate had been steel faced. A further 40 proofs were printed on simili-Japan paper after 1932 by Leblanc and Trautmann; these impressions were numbered 1/40 to 40/40 (the Courtauld impression is from this later printing).
