In 1906 Matisse explored lithography for the first time. This print demonstrates his interest in Japanese art, through the diagonal positioning of the female nude without shading or perspective. The loosely suggested forms rendered in bold strokes indicate a quick life study. Unlike later lithographs, where Matisse worked directly on the printing stone, here he drew the image on paper which was then transferred to the stone.
